Hi, it’s me, Marla Jo, your columnist and deals maven. If you know a great deal, let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also find me at Deals Diva on Facebook and Twitter. And don’t forget to read my humor columns on Wednesdays in the Register.
Like the OC Fair? Then consider buying an earlybird OC Fair Super Pass, which grants passholders unlimited access to the 2017 fair express entry at all gates and 2-for-1 tickets for select events at the Pacific Amphitheatre, The Hangar and Action Sports Arena. You can also buy up to 10 additional tickets for $10 each, a $2 discount. The Super Pass is on sale now for $30 for adults, $23 for kids and seniors, plus a $5 handling fee, until May 31. Yeah, those are annoying. The 2017 fair runs from July 14 to August 13, Wednesday – Sunday. Learn more at OCFair.com
FREE APP OF THE WEEK
Magnifying Glass With Light by Falcon In Motion. Ever sat in a darkened restaurant, straining to read a menu? How about reading microscopic print on a label, or a map? Trying to get a model number off the back of your TV? If you’ve ever struggled with this as I have, you’ll love this free smartphone app, which not only uses your phone camera to magnify the print, but also lights it up. You can also buy the $1.99 “pro version,” though I haven’t seen the need to upgrade yet. It appears this is only currently available for Apple products, sadly.
GET YOUR PASS NOW
I’ve written before about how you can get a $10 lifetime pass to visit all national parks, if you’re age 62 or older. But, if you’ve never bothered, better get one now. According to the AARP, sometime this year, the feds plan to increase the cost of the pass to $80. Ouch. You can choose to pay $20 for an annual pass, which can then later be applied toward the $80 lifetime pass. But, better yet, why not just get it now? You can get this pass at any federal recreation site, generally at the ranger station. You can also order by mail for $20. Applicants must provide documentation of age and residency or citizenship. You might also get 50 percent off some amenity fees such as camping and boating. It depends on the location. Learn more here: store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html
Renting a tuxedo? Go early to pick out and reserve, because most chains will charge you a rush fee. Shop online to select the style and accessories you like before you come in, to save time inside the store. You can get discounts or even earn money and a free tuxedo rental by referring your friends to rent. For weddings, the groom rents free, typically, if his ushers also rent there. Instead of renting shoes, cuff links and such, borrow from friends. Bring a dress swatch if you want to match your date’s dress. Don’t come to reserve on a Thursday or Friday if you can help it – everyone’s picking up their tuxedos for the weekend, so it’s crazy then.
FREE CONTACT LENSES
If you want to try disposable contact lenses, here’s an offer: Acuvue will give you a certificate good for a free trial set of lenses, which you can use at your local eye doctor’s office. Note that Johnson & Johnson Vision Care is going to spam you on whichever email address you submit, so I’d use one that you set up just for these offers. Learn more and sign up at acuvue.com
THRIFT SHOPPING PARTY
If you host a private thrift shopping party at the Deja New resale boutique, each of your friends gets $5 in Deja New dollars to spend. And whatever you spend goes to help those in need. I’ve done this, it’s fun. Gather up 10 of your friends and they’ll hold a private party for you. This is an after hours party that includes modest refreshments, and you’ll find some cute clothes and accessories, too. (New) Deja New Location: 711 W 17th St, Suite A10, Santa Ana. Note that the boutique is also open to the public for limited hours, call and ask. Phone 949-631-1287
Did you know that you can stop into any See’s Candies store and ask for a free sample? Just in case you’re too thin or your blood sugar is low. Warning: This could lead to a purchase. Then give me a call, I’ll be right over to help you out.
If you belong to LA Fitness, did you know that you can give anyone a 14-day VIP free trial pass, that you can send it from the LA Fitness smartphone app? All you have to do is put their name and email into the app, and it will send them a free 14-day pass. I’ve sent a few passes to my friends so they can come with me. The app is useful anyway for keeping track of hours and classes and such.
