The final meeting to create leagues for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years is today.
A series of releaguing meetings have reduced to three the number of finalist proposals from an original pool of more than 40 proposals.
The most popular, by votes, was Corona del Mar’s proposal that would send Crean Lutheran and Garden Grove into the Empire League, Laguna Beach to the Golden West League, Loara to the Garden Grove League, Orange to the Orange Coast League, and new school Portola to the Pacific Coast League.
That proposal would move Cypress and Corona del Mar to the Sunset League to form an eight-school conference, with the eight schools being divided into two sub-conference leagues with league membership varying from sport to sport. Two Orange County conferences, the Century Conference and Coast View Conference, operate that way.
After the most-recent meeting in late March reduced the number of proposals to three, counter-proposals were permitted to be submitted. Four counter-proposals were submitted, from the Empire League, Century Conference, Golden West League and Sunset League.
The most ambitious of those might be the Golden West League counter-proposal that would have create a football-only, eight-team Golden West Conference of Garden Grove, Ocean View, Western, Godinez, Segerstrom, Westminster, Laguna Beach and Marina.
The meeting is at the Embassy Suites in Garden Grove.
