ANAHEIM – Last year, Orange County benefited from more than 1 million hours of community service. Many of the volunteers who put in those hours were honored Monday, April 24, at OneOC’s annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards luncheon.
The gathering at Disneyland Hotel, attended by about 1,000 people, paid tribute to 375 individuals, families, groups and corporate teams for their unselfish efforts in such areas as health care, education and youth services, the arts and culture, and the environment. The honorees were nominated by 163 nonprofits and 43 companies.
Every year, a special Giving is Living Award recognizes the contributions of a partnership between a local nonprofit and corporate volunteers. For 2017, OneOC presented the award to the Access OC collaboration of the nonprofit Illumination Foundation and Mission Hospital, which is part of the St. Joseph Hoag Health medical system.
With the help of Mission Hospital, Access OC has provided free surgeries to Orange County residents through “Super Surgery Saturdays” held over the past three years. Volunteers from Mission Hospital — doctors, nurses, technicians and other staff — donate their time and skills to offer low-risk outpatient surgeries for patients referred by community health clinics.
Access OC was among 29 nominees for the Giving is Living award.
