LOS ANGELES — Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez looked lost at the plate in his first two games back from the disabled list. His timing was off, Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday morning.

In his third game back, Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with three RBI in the Dodgers’ 6-3 win over the Miami Marlins. He collected his first two extra-base hits in nearly a month, two of the six doubles the Dodgers hit before an announced crowd of 44,646 at Dodger Stadium.

By winning three of four games against the Marlins, the Dodgers improved to 26-19, two games behind the Colorado Rockies for first place in the National League West.

Gonzalez’s three-hit performance was his first since Aug. 22, 2016. Yasmani Grandal had two doubles and scored two runs in a 3-for-4 performance. Kiké Hernandez and Chris Taylor hit one double apiece.

Joc Pederson hit a solo home run for the Dodgers, his second of the season and his first since Opening Day.

Brandon McCarthy (4-1) took a perfect game into the fifth inning before the Marlins rallied for a run. A.J. Ellis, the longtime Dodger catcher making his only appearance in the series, was responsible for the RBI.

McCarthy allowed three hits, walked one batter and struck out five. His 75 pitches were the fewest he’s thrown in a start this year; his six innings were the second-most.

Luis Avilan and Josh Fields combined to throw 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Pedro Baez allowed a run in the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, Kenley Jansen allowed a solo home run to Justin Bour in a non-save situation. It was the first home run Jansen has allowed this season.

The Dodgers have an off-day Monday before hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs to conclude a 10-game homestand.

Tavon Austin’s absence gives Rams’ other receivers a chance to shine

At 5-foot-8, Tavon Austin casts a relatively small shadow, but it’s one that will loom over Rams practice this week as the team enters the final phase of its offseason work.

Austin won’t be on the field. The Rams’ top returning receiver had wrist surgery this month and, presumably, will be ready to return when training camp opens in late July. But these are complicated times for Austin and the Rams’ receivers, and no void goes unfilled in the NFL.

The Rams will hold 10 full-team practices at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks over the next three weeks, with the initial one scheduled for Monday afternoon. Will the Rams figure out how much they need Austin? Or will they see a path toward a future without him?

New coach Sean McVay and General Manager Les Snead have revamped the Rams’ group of receivers. Kenny Britt and Brian Quick departed via free agency. The Rams signed Robert Woods and used two of their first four draft picks on receivers Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds.

Kupp, a third-round pick, was the star of this month’s Rams rookie mini-camp, while Reynolds displayed good length, hands and speed. It’s reasonable to think both receivers could play roles in 2017.

“I think the idea is that we’re expecting some of these guys to contribute,” McVay said, “and they certainly have to earn it and we know that we’re always looking to create competition at all spots. Whoever we think is the best player to give us the best chance to have success, that’s who is going to play.”

It’s reasonable to look down the line and see Woods as a consistent, good-hands, good-blocking receiver, Reynolds as the deep threat and Kupp as the tough inside receiver. So, what about Austin?

Austin, the Rams’ No. 8 overall draft pick in 2013, signed a four-year, $42-million contract extension before last season. In four seasons, though, Austin has never topped 58 receptions or 509 yards.

It’s time for Austin to show something, particularly to a new coach who won’t be shy about making changes. It’s noteworthy that after the 2017 season, Austin can be traded for a salary-cap hit of only $1 million. On the other hand, Austin deserves a chance to show his skills in a better-designed offense.

Former coach Jeff Fisher and his lengthy list of offensive coordinators seemed to prefer Austin as something of a “gadget” player. They used him on short passes and reverses and even put him in the backfield. The idea seemed to be, let Austin use his great speed to turn small plays into big plays.

McVay has a different idea. The Rams now are more likely to line up Austin on the outside and use him as more of a deep threat, similar to the way McVay used DeSean Jackson in Washington and the way new Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur used Taylor Gabriel in Atlanta.

It’s worth a shot. There are questions about whether Austin has the size, and even the skill set, to thrive in an expanded role, but the Rams need to find out.

“He’s got great hands,” LaFleur said. “When we judge receivers, it’s more about their ability to separate. The size is not as big of a concern. … (Gabriel) could get open and he was electric with the ball in his hands. So hopefully we can get Tavon going the same way.”

That’s down the line, though. Austin won’t participate in these offseason practices, which will open the door for Kupp, Reynolds and second-year receiver Pharoh Cooper to make an impact.

Kupp already has become something of a folk hero. He put up dynamic statistics in college, albeit at Eastern Washington, mostly against smaller-school competition.

The natural question, one Kupp has heard for years, is whether he can create separation and effectively win battles for balls, against NFL defensive backs. Kupp will get his first, internal test this week in scrimmages against the Rams’ defense.

“If you’re trying to prove something, you’ve got a weight on your chest,” Kupp said. “There’s no room for error. I’m just trying to come out and be who I am. I’m just going to play football. I know I’m a great player. So I’m going to come out and just let that show. That should be enough.”

Angels Notes: Cam Bedrosian ready to get on the mound

NEW YORK — Cam Bedrosian is about to take a key step toward the end of what has been a longer-than-expected stint on the disabled list.

Bedrosian is scheduled to throw off a mound on Monday, Manager Mike Scioscia said. It would be his first time off a mound since he was placed on the disabled list with a strained groin April 22.

At the time, Bedrosian felt he would miss only two weeks.

Scioscia said Bedrosian’s bullpen session will be “light.” Presumably, he’ll continue throwing off the mound, and increasing the intensity, every two or three days, until he’s ready for a rehab assignment.

If all goes well, it’s realistic to think he could be back in two to three weeks.

Huston Street, who is pitching in games in extended spring training, could also be back within that time. Street has been out all season with a strained lat.

STILL NO PUJOLS

Albert Pujols was out of the Angels lineup for the third game in a row on Sunday, nursing a tight right hamstring.

Pujols took batting practice before Saturday’s game, but apparently did not feel well enough for Scioscia to consider him available to even pinch-hit.

After Sunday’s series finale against the New York Mets, the Angels have four games against the Tampa Bay Rays, so they’ll again have the DH spot available for Pujols.

The Angels lost each of the first two games without Pujols, after losing four of six games earlier this month without Mike Trout, but Scioscia said the problems go beyond those players’ absences.

“If you’re going to be good you have to be able to absorb a player who is not swinging to his potential or is banged up and out of the lineup,” Scioscia said. “Our issue has been you have a guy banged up, along with four or five guys who aren’t in their game. That creates issues.”

Angels Notes: Beginning the evaluation of Doug Fister

NEW YORK — When Billy Eppler was asked how long he anticipated Doug Fister pitching in the minors, the Angels general manager answered: “That’s going to be up to him.”

The Angels’ deal with Fister, which was completed on Saturday, includes no guarantees for Fister, financially or otherwise. The Angels signed him to take a look at him, and they will then evaluate when — or if — he comes up to join their rotation.

“We’ll evaluate each start,” Eppler said. “See what we see, and make our decision.”

Fister, 33, posted a 4.64 ERA with the Houston Astros last season, numbers apparently not sufficient to earn him a contract he liked over the winter.

In the meantime, he has been working out on his own, pitching to college hitters. The Angels were among the teams that scouted a workout recently. Eppler said they saw him throwing 87 mph. That, combined with his track record, was enough for them to give him this opportunity.

“We’ve seen Doug pitch for a long time,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “Hopefully his stuff is at a level we saw when he was successful. He’s starting a progression. We’ll just evaluate him after a workout and see where he is and hopefully, if he throws the ball like he can, he’s going to be important to our rotation.”

Fister, who was optioned to Class-A Inland Empire for procedural reasons, will begin his workouts at the Angels’ complex in Arizona. Eppler said he will throw a couple bullpen sessions, then face some hitters in batting practice, then pitch in an extended spring training game.

After all that, which could take 10 days or two weeks, he will report to Triple-A Salt Lake City, Eppler said. The GM said he’s expecting Fister to start out at three or four innings in Arizona.

That gives the Angels’ time not only to evaluate Fister, but to determine who he could replace in the Angels’ rotation. Although they have been hurt by injuries to Garrett Richards and Tyler Skaggs, the replacements are holding their own.

“At the moment they are pitching well,” Eppler said.

ANOTHER DAY FOR PUJOLS

Albert Pujols was out of the Angels’ lineup for the second straight day, resting a tight right hamstring. Pujols took batting practice on the field, and could be available to play Sunday.

“He feels much better,” Scioscia said. “Hopefully he’ll progress. We’ll keep evaluating him.”

Pujols’ compared this injury to one in 2015, when he missed two games. Pujols would have to play first if he returned Sunday for the final game of a series under National League rules at Citi Field. Starting Monday, the Angels have four games with the DH at Tampa Bay, before returning to NL rules next weekend in Miami.

Andrew Bailey was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Fister. Bailey, who is now eligible June 9, has been shut down from throwing because of a shoulder problem. …

Terry Collins became the Mets’ all-time leader in games managed on Saturday. Coincidentally, he did so against the Angels, the team he managed from 1997-99. Collins also served as one of Scioscia’s coaches in the Dodgers farm system.

NHL fines Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf $10,000 for use of inappropriate remark

ANAHEIM – The NHL on Saturday fined Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf $10,000 for the use of what it called an inappropriate remark Thursday night during Game 4 of the Western Conference finals against Nashville.

The fine is the maximum amount allowable under the terms of the joint collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ union. Getzlaf’s comment was deemed a violation of the NHL’s policy “which prohibits inappropriate and offensive remarks, and the use of obscene, profane or abusive
language or gestures in the game.”

TSN reporter Frank Seravalli first reported that Getzlaf used a homophobic slur. The incident, according to a video on the hockeyfeed.com website, appeared after Nate Thompson was checked from behind by Nashville’s Austin Watson. Getzlaf yelled at referee Kelly Sutherland afterward as he skated behind him.

The center then yelled the slur to his intended target when he got back to the Ducks bench. It isn’t clear in the video if that was also directed at Sutherland.

“Getzlaf’s comment in Thursday’s game, particularly as directed to another individual on the ice, was inappropriately demeaning and disrespectful, and crossed the line into behavior that we deem unacceptable,” Colin Campbell, the NHL’s senior vice president of hockey operations, said in a statement. “The type of language chosen and utilized in this instance will not be tolerated in the National Hockey League.”

The fine will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. Getzlaf, a leading candidate in the Conn Smythe Trophy discussion as the playoffs’ most valuable player, has been captain of the Ducks since 2010 when he succeeded the retired Scott Niedermayer.

The Ducks and Predators are scheduled to play Game 5 at Honda Center on Saturday night.

Whicker: Ducks’ Cam Fowler, a defenseman in full

ANAHEIM — When he first got here, Cam Fowler moved in with Scott Niedermayer and family.

There are trophies in that house. Seven years later Fowler is putting together his own mantelpiece.

On Thursday, Fowler played more than 28 minutes in the Game 4 overtime survival test at Nashville, the one that tied the Western Conference finals, 2-2, with Game 5 on Saturday at Honda Center. He has topped 30 minutes twice and he averages 26:43. That would be second in the NHL to Erik Karlsson if Fowler, who missed the first series, had played enough to qualify. Fowler is also playing a team-high 51 seconds per shift.

He is out there dancing with stars every night. He is on the penalty kill and the power play. He is running the game now, which was Niedermayer’s role in four Stanley Cup seasons.

It’s not a fair comparison yet. But it does dampen the assumption that the Ducks lack the elite defenseman required to play for another Cup.

Each champion, they say, has to have a True One, whether it’s Duncan Keith or Drew Doughty or Nicklas Lidstrom.

But sometimes that title is bestowed in retrospect, a self-fulfilling prophecy. Pittsburgh’s Chris Letang was the defensive star of last year’s Stanley Cup run. He has missed this entire postseason and the Penguins are back in the Eastern Conference finals.

You can calculate the chicken-egg factor all you want. The point is that Fowler has done a lot of hard miles to get here.

He was thrust into the lineup at 18 years ago, in Randy Carlyle’s first team. He played under the sword of tough plus-minus numbers. He became tentative at times. Perhaps the trade rumors had an effect, as well as the return of the coach who first believed in him.

This was the season Fowler made the All-Star Game and scored a career-high 11 goals. He is 25, with a lot of ice time left.

“He (Niedermayer) always told me to be confident, to trust my skating,” Fowler said Friday. “It always starts with me being assertive with the puck, not having to think as much. Push the puck at both ends.

“You tell yourself you belong in that role, with big minutes, playing in all situations. You just need to play the same night in and night out.”

In Game 4, Fowler wound up with the puck after a turnover, just inside his blue line. His instinctive thought was to retreat behind his net and get his team aligned. But the Predators were trying to change lines without getting the puck deep enough. Fowler looked up and saw Rickard Rakell, lonesome as Hank Williams, standing on Nashville’s blue line.

“That’s a pretty easy play for a defenseman, finding a teammate all alone,” Fowler said. “He did the rest of it. He shot it across his body without a screen (in front of goalie Pekka Rinne). That’s tough to do.”

It gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead and solidified perhaps their best first period of the postseason.

Fowler was one of the highest-rated players in junior hockey. He had scored 55 points in 55 games for the Windsor Spitfires, who won 50 of 68 games. Ryan Ellis, Nashville’s impressive defenseman, was on that team, playing with Fowler on power plays, and so were Nashville’s Austin Watson and New Jersey’s Taylor Hall and Adam Henrique. Hall was the first-overall pick, by Edmonton.

The Ducks, picking 12th in the 2010 draft at Staples Center, didn’t concern themselves with Fowler. The picks kept coming and Fowler kept sitting in the stands. When Dallas chose goalie Jack Campbell, who is now in the Kings’ organization, the Ducks struck.

“We never dreamed he’d be there but he has not disappointed,” Carlyle said.

The No. 4 pick in that draft was Ryan Johansen. Columbus eventually dealt him to Nashville for Seth Jones.

Johansen is Nashville’s first-line center and has been a significant thorn for the Ducks, especially in the final minute of regulation of Game 4 when he cross-checked Josh Manson into the boards. That removed Manson from the spot he would have occupied, and Filip Forsberg got into that space and tied the score.

The Ducks, who had been herded into the box throughout the period, were furious, but managed to win, 3-2, in OT.

Then Johansen spent Thursday night in Vanderbilt Hospital with thigh surgery that will remove him from the postseason. Flowers from the Ducks are not forthcoming, at least not now.

Niedermayer? He’s still around. He spent most of the season in San Diego, working with young defensemen on the Ducks’ AHL team. His former guest has made his own room, and his board, too.

Aruba’s only 18-hole golf course has a landscape that conjures many regions

As the words com Tierra del Sol e out of Oliver Riding’s mouth, you can’t help but be skeptical.

He’s played more than 100 golf courses in 18 countries, and there’s no doubt he’s well traveled and knowledgeable about the game. But since Riding has called Tierra del Sol Golf Course home for most of his career, his opinion of Aruba’s lone 18-hole championship layout isn’t without prejudice.

“I’ve traveled the world and have been fortunate enough to see some very cool golf courses,” said Riding, 45, director of golf operations since 2015 who also served as head professional from 2003-2010. “But, design-wise, it doesn’t get much better than Tierra de Sol. You can play it multiple times and you’ll never get bored. You get out there and you really feel disconnected from the world.”

As you begin your journey around the 6,400-yard layout on Aruba’s captivating, northwest region, Riding’s words start to make sense. As your round gains momentum and hugs the coastline — all but three holes have ocean views — you encounter goats, owls, ducks, exotic birds and palm trees. And in case you weren’t convinced of Riding’s assessment by the time you get to the 16th tee, try gazing down the 360-yard, par-4 fairway and seeing rugged desert, cacti, rock formations and dunes with the Caribbean Sea and California Lighthouse in the backdrop and not nod your head in agreement.

In short, this is Tierra del Sol. Arizona. Scotland. The Caribbean. All meshed into one.

“It’s easy to build a beautiful course but make it unplayable for the bogey golfer,” Riding said. “That’s not the case here. It’s gorgeous, but fair and playable.”

No portrayal of Tierra del Sol — Spanish for “land of sun” — would be complete without mention of the wind. A creation of Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Kyle Phillips, Tierra de Sol demands a keen awareness to the steady breeze, so the designers were cognizant of the prevailing winds on each hole. That’s not a typo on your scorecard: There’s good reason the par-4, second hole is what seems to be an unjust 453 yards while the par-4, 284-yard fifth appears on paper to be an easy birdie opportunity.

“If you had to play 18 holes of golf with a crosswind, you’d go loopy pretty quickly,” Riding said. “The wind here is going to be a factor, but it’s consistent; always at your back, or in your face. You just have to adjust accordingly.”

The course, which opened in 1995 and hosted the PGA Tour Canada-sanctioned Aruba Cup for the first time last year, is an amenity of Tierra del Sol Resort & Golf, which offers condos, villas and estate vacation homes as well as a spa, salon, pool, tennis courts, beach access and restaurants. Green fees range from $109 to $169 depending on time of day and season, and Nike club rentals are available.
